Library Assistant, Part-time

Hours: Tuesday 2-5pm, Wed. 5-8pm & Thurs. 5-8pm during the summer, Fri. 2-5pm, Sat. 9-2pm 1-2 times/month 12 hours per week

Summary of Duties: Performs librarian tasks for a Library department.  Has responsibility for one or more specialized tasks or programmatic functions. Performs other duties as required.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:
At the customer service desk performs all related tasks and transactions involving patrons and materials including:

  • Searching the Internet and library databases for information
  • Entering new patron records
  • Searching for available items and placing holds
  • Provides excellent customer service while providing all library check in/check out, general reference and interlibrary loan service at the front desk.
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Assists with program setup and materials preparation.
  • Troubleshoots printer, computer and network issues as needed.
  • Assists patrons with computer and technical questions and digital library databases.
  • Assists in opening and closing procedures of the library
  • Empties the book return, assists in checking in, and accurately shelves library materials
  • Performs housekeeping duties when needed
  • May assist with programs and other services
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Skills/Abilities/Training Required:

  • Genuine enthusiasm for working with and learning about new technologies.
  • Skilled in alphabetizing and putting materials in order.
  • Ability to follow written and oral direction including using library equipment according to instruction.
  • Physical requirements include lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs frequently, bending, kneeling, reaching, using a step stool, standing for lengthy periods, and pushing/pulling loaded book carts up to 100 lbs.
  • The ability to stand for long periods of time performing tasks at a computer workstation are required.
  • Ability to interact with the staff and public in a positive and helpful manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree (preferred)

Library experience (preferred)

Computer skills sufficient to perform the functions of the Library’s systems, particularly the online catalog and circulation functions, email, Google, and other electronic platforms and digital offerings.

Salary:
 $16-17 per hour depending on experience.  This position does not include benefits.
